Clare Ghigo - Bio

Clare Ghigo is a distinguished mezzo-soprano with a broad and impressive operatic repertoire, known for her versatility in both theatre and music. She has graced stages across the globe, performing in major cultural hubs like San Francisco, Barcelona, Vienna, Salzburg, London, Paris, Berlin, and more, making a significant mark in the international opera scene.

 

Her collaboration with renowned Korean soprano Sumi Jo, alongside Heather Tan, in hosting an international masterclass for Opera Festival Asia, underscores her influence and stature in the operatic community. During the pandemic, Clare remained active in the arts, contributing to various innovative video productions such as the adaptation of Beethoven's *Fidelio/Leonora* with The Strada Stretta Concept, *Trouser Girl*, and a chorus role in Ravel's *L'enfant et les sortilèges* with Virtual Opera.

 

In addition to her singing career, Clare is a visual artist, co-founding the audiovisual group Odekrom with artist Joseph Calleja. Their notable projects include *Stabat Metric*(Malta), *Pictured at Rest*(Scotland), *Ikhal* for (Tokyo Biennale) and *Waiting R003*, showcasing her creative range beyond music.

 

Clare has earned recognition in numerous operatic competitions, winning the Malta International Singing Competition and achieving significant placements in prestigious contests like the Alfredo Kraus Vocal Competition, Hans Gabor Belvedere competition, London Handel Competition, and Vincero Competition.

 

Her career includes collaborations with celebrated artists such as Joseph Calleja, Bryn Terfel, Jennifer Larmore and Montserrat Caballé, as well as working with esteemed ensembles like the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Furthermore, Clare's commitment to her craft extends to academia, where she completed a Postgraduate in Spinal Rehabilitation for singers at the University of Wales Trinity St David's, reflecting her dedication to the well-being of musicians.

 

In her leadership role at the Manoel Theatre Youth Theatre and as a lecturer at Mikiel Anton Vassalli College, Clare has directed and assisted in several opera projects, including *Gawhar Misjub* and *Der Kaiser von Atlantis* and Walküre (DVP Berlin). In August 2024, Clare Ghigo assisted Richard Gammon as an assistant director for the production of Richard Strauss's opera *Elektra* in Berlin. This opportunity allowed her to delve deeper into the complexities of one of Strauss's most intense and challenging operas, contributing her expertise to a major production in one of the world's leading opera cities. Clare's involvement in this project highlights her growing influence in the opera world, not only as a performer but also as a director, further solidifying her reputation as a multifaceted artist in the field. Her involvement with the English National Opera chorus, ENOA, and the Solti Accademia Del Bel Canto as a scholar further cements her position as a standout figure in the world of opera.
